Environmental Conservation
Café Britt contributes 5% of the sale price of all hardwood products to rainforest conservation. This funding helps institutions like the Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS), Friends of Coco Island Foundation, The Neotropic Foundation and the Dry Forest Conservation Fund for conservation of Santa Rosa National Park in Guanacaste.
Café Britt's operation meets or exceeds international environmental standards under the norms of ISO 14001: 2004. Programs and projects are in place to make effective use of natural resources, prevent pollution and minimize negative environmental side effects.
Some of these projects are:
Organic Waste Management Program: Creates organic fertilizers using compost and worm compost made from waste products.
Reforestation Program: Plant and incorporates new native tree species on our coffee farm.
Coffee Grower Program: Evaluates conventional coffee farmers via farm visits to provide technical assistance, improve quality and educate farmers about social and environmental norms.
Recycling Program: Recycles basic products such as paper, cardboard, plastic and cans. Promotes reuse of paper and plastic. Creates standards for waste reduction. Fostered a switch to product labels with environmentally friendly inks.
Environment and the community: Through “Environmental Week,” Café Britt staff and members of our community participate together in activities that illustrate the importance of environmental protection and encourage sound waste-management practices and effective use of natural resources. Britt volunteers also work with the Public Service Company to plant 200 trees on La Promesa farm in Heredia.
Café Britt surpasses Costa Rica's own environmental-protection laws. |
